Hologic Dimensions Specifications
Shielding – While no (in the wall) shielding is required for mammography (like MRI, CT, etc.), lead glass shields are sold with the mammography systems. Furthermore, some states may require a shielding report to be submitted prior to the installation of the system.
Space – 9x 12 feet is generally the minimum room size recommended for a Hologic 3D Mammography System.
Power– Single Phase 208-240v 40A for Gantry. Acquisition Workstation is 110v (standard plug).
PACS Network – Most reputable PACs providers are suitable to work with a major player like Hologic but it will be important that the network is able to receive / store / view Breast Tomosynthesis Objects (BTO) files.
Network Drop – A network drop will need to be installed in proximity to the acquisition workstation.
Reading Images – It will be important for you to decide how breast images will be read. Will you read them in-house? If so, you will need to decide which of two directions you will go—reading from your PACs system (will likely require additional hardware/software from your PACs provider) or reading from a stand along (but connected to PACs) physician’s workstation with high resolution monitors (at least 5MP). Alternatively, you may store them (only) on your network but have an “outside” provider perform the reads.
Computer Aided Detector (CAD) – In simple terms, a separate stand alone computer helps to determine possible breast lesions. Whether or not CAD is desired is often the preference of the radiologist. Some like “big bother” being a second set of eyes, where others find it to be more of distraction. Some newer mammo models have CAD installed on board.
C-View License – More buyers are interested in systems that have this license—which means less dose for the patient by eliminating the need to take 2D images (computer reconstructs these from the 3D sweep images). 2D images are often compared to priors.
Upright Stereotactic Biopsy – With more centers now desiring to be able to do more than just screening and diagnostic, many buyers are interested in systems that have the unique software and hardware to be able to perform stereotactic biopsy.
Extended Service Coverage – Much like you carry car insurance to protect your car from eventualities, most choose to cover their 3D mammo with an extended (5+ year) service plan that covers expensive digital detectors, tubes, etc.
